ANCIENT MODERNITY

The Hnar
Ensemble

157 strings, wood, metal, and animal skin prove the indigenous instruments of Armenia were built for the future, not just the past.

MUSIC BY JOHN HODIAN

A Reinvention

From John Hodian, the acclaimed composer behind The Naghash Ensemble, comes Hnar: six of Armenia’s most virtuosic players on indigenous instruments, including duduk, santoor, qanun, oud, dhol, and cello. But this is not a preservation project; it’s a reinvention. Hodian pushes the instruments’ microtonal shimmer and percussive grit to their technical limits, creating urgent, hypnotic rhythms and captivating melodies.
